Character Info
Character's Name: Riku
Character's Canon: Kingdom Hearts
Character's Age: 17-18 (How does the passage of time work in KH)
Canon Point: Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage-
Background/History: https://www.khwiki.com/riku
Strengths:
Loyalty: After overcoming his insecurities about his friendships and his jealousy, Riku has proven himself to be a loyal friend. He is absolutely dedicated to his friends, his comrades and especially to Sora, who is often identified as the 'one he wants to protect'. He is more than willing to put his life on the line for Sora, Kairi, Aqua, the king and even the other members of the 'seven guardians of light' if need be. While this can lead to some recklessness on his part in more dire moments, Riku has found his focus and self-worth in being a person who can protect his friends no matter the circumstances.
Resilience: Riku has been through a lot.
He starts the series falling into darkness, being manipulated by Maleficant and it's been a rollercoaster ride from then on. He's seen both of his dear childhood friends brush close to death more than once. He's lost his form and faced the consequences of his own foolish mistakes again and again. He is followed by the nightmares of his past. But he has persevered and found himself in a position where he has the focus and strength to protect the people he cares most about. It takes him no time to commit to the task of helping Mickey to save Aqua, having learned that she sacrificed herself to save him. Through strength and love for his friends, he's gone from being rejected by the Keyblade after falling into darkness to earning the title of a true Keyblade Master. By persisting through all of his hardships, sometimes with the help of friends and sometimes in the shadows of self-isolation, Riku has come into his own as a young man who can fulfill his destiny as he keeps moving forward on his path to the dawn.
Cool-headedness: While not immune to recklessness or the occasional outburst, Riku is one of the most coolheaded and collected characters of the main Kingdom Hearts cast. He plays a direct contrast to Sora's emotional impulsivity and 'act-first, think-later' attitude. It allows him to plan and push through moments that even Sora cannot suffer easily. Kairi has noted that he's started to be more of a person to 'follow his heart' like Sora and he agrees he's become more 'Sora-esque', but he still plays it more careful than his best friend.
Riku is able to commit to difficult decisions like staying behind in the darkness alone and giving up his form for Sora's sake without hesitation. He can take on burdens with an even expression, especially if it means Sora and Kairi will not suffer. He can face traumas like revisiting the 'DarkWorld' to find Aqua with Mickey. It is only when his two childhood friends are in danger that he truly loses his cool.
Weaknesses:
Guilt: Riku's still carrying some baggage from the time he fell to darkness. While he's come a long way in accepting the darkness in his heart and learning from his mistakes, he still fears hurting the people closest to him. He still doubts his own abilities and the strength of his heart. He's not as lost as he once was and the Mark of Mastery exam helped him to face a great deal of the self-doubt he's been harboring, he still lets these feelings get in the way of his confidence and his belief that he is a good person. A person capable of being a hero. As far as he's seen it, he's caused too much pain for that to ever be true.
He still sees Sora as the essence of light and himself as a person in darkness, who can only face the light but cannot be it. He's started to embrace the darkness, but cannot escape it.
Difficulty Expressing Himself: Riku's kind of a classic hover-hander, both physically and emotionally. While it's another thing he's gotten better about in the past 2-3 years, he still can't speak his heart honestly to those that need to hear it. With Mickey as his primary confidant, Riku tends to bark out his heart's honest feelings at enemies in the heat of the moment than tell these things to Kairi or Sora. He admits in 3D that he puts walls up around his heart and the Notre Dame characters observe that he's still 'hiding a lot of things'.
Physical contact seems to be even more difficult for him. He tries but often reaches out and withdraws soon after. It takes Sora's aggressive affections or Kairi's gentle nudging for him to offer or seek out touch from those that matter. Even with the novels asserting Sora's 'held his hand thousands of times', after the events of KH1, he's often seen failing to return a hug or commit to reaching out to comfort another person.
Self-Sacrificial: Riku's very willing to take the fall when needed. He's still got some issues with self-flagellation. He even has abilities like 'Sacrifice' that allow him to put a large chunk of his HP into an attack, leaving him vulnerable.
He's a boy who dealt with his sins by forcing himself into isolation, hiding from his friends and giving up his body to protect Sora and Kairi. He's the protector and the true inheritor of Terra's role as a Keyblade wielder, the one who should be responsible and who has tried for a long time to be the one to 'set a good example', so he puts himself in positions where he takes the brunt force of mental or physical harm. Dying is no problem if it means Sora lives. Loneliness is fine if his friends are safe from the darkness.
Powers/Abilities:
• Keyblade summoning!
• Magic (elemental/buffs/debuffs/healing)
• Can harness the powers of ~darkness~ to enhance his physical abilities and make barriers
• Immunity to corruption from darkness
• He's a dream eater and can fuse with other dream eaters and harness their abilities
• The power of waking, which allows him to awaken those trapped in 'sleep'
Other Noteworthy Traits:
He can fly a gummi ship! And dive into dream worlds. He probably won't be doing either here.
Also he's not terrible at figuring out technology.
Weapons & Other Special Inventory:
- The Way to the Dawn Keyblade
- Special clothes from the 3 fairies that protect him from darkness still in their suitcase
- 3 potions
- A panacea
- He bringing his Komory Bat (it's not an item but he needs his boy)
Color: Yellow - Riku often has yellow incorporated into his clothings designs, and also because yellow is associated with light!
Sample: (Bakerstreet thread)
[ OPTIONAL ] World Aspect: Given all the princess/fairytale theming, it wouldn't be bad to yank from the world origins story from KHUX maybe ?
